- Max Black, Two Broke Girls
Introduction
Warner Bros infamous sitcom “Two Broke Girls” revolves around two girls in the neighborhood - Williamsburg of Brooklyn. As the name itself suggests, this show features a plot about friendship, the struggle of life with very little money, and broke the stereotypes for erotic humour. The women of their own substances strike up an unlikely friendship and find their way along in life.
Needless to say, on a gloomy day, this show will make you smile as Max Black (Kat Dennings) and Caroline Channing (Beth Behrs) struggle to grow their small business (Max’s Homemade Cupcakes) .
We have learned a few marketing tips from their journey.
Psst..
As of now, this blog is covering marketing tips only from Season 1. (We will add more ideas from other seasons).
5 Marketing Tips From Two Broke Girls
1) The Pop-Up Sale
When Max breaks her stove, Caroline tries to sell her expensive TAT rings to Barney to buy a new stove for their cupcake business. Eventually, Caroline discovers that she no longer can use her former reputation to sell the TAT rings, and so she ends up with an idea to have a pop up sale.
Girls try to announce the pop up sale in lift but the audience did not show interest as they aren’t interested in those rings but when girls try to re-announce pop up sale in front of over jeweled up ladies. The ladies got super excited.
And so what you can learn is that you should ALWAYS make sure that you know your audience. As Max & Caroline tried to sell the rings to non interested audiences, they were not able to make a sale but if you know your audience and target them wisely. You can end up making good sales.
Always know who is your potential customer, it will help you to come up with your market strategy accordingly. Try to put yourself in their shoes, then only you can market your campaign, product anything, and make a good fortune out of it.
2) The Kosher Cupcakes
Max & Caroline get a Kosher Cupcake gig. But Max didn’t make the authentic Kosher cupcakes while Caroline tries to convince Max that she should make strictly Kosher Cupcakes only.
Since these cupcakes were a fraud they ended up regretting because there was no payment with tons of guilt.
So the lesson here is never try to sell a wrong thing to the wrong audience, you shall always treat your customers as a god. Sell what they desire, not what you think is good. If you don’t target the right services for the right person you might end up like Max & Caroline.
3) The Secret Ingredient
As Caroline is obsessed with her new passion for coupons, she discovers Max’s secret ingredient for her cupcakes. Well there was no such thing as Max’s big secret it was just… drums roll!
Pillsbury.
Here we learn that Pillsbury was the only thing which makes Max’s cupcake special so what we can learn from here is that you must always know your USP before marketing your products
Focus more on your secret Ingredient and try to market it as much as possible.
4) The Spring Break
Despite their extremely stressful life, Max and Caroline finally get a spring break to blow off the steam. And don’t even get me started on Caroline’s shimmy shimmy of!
Girls went to a party where Caroline starts to target the elite class and shows off about their business and boom! They get a 1000 cupcake order.
So the lesson here is that when you are a small business owner you are never on a holiday. You have to use every single opportunity you get in order to grow your business.
5) Martha Stewart Have a Ball: Part 2
The girls plan to stalk Martha Stewart at the Met Gala in order to make sure she tastes their cupcake. The plan was very simple: they had to stalk her and get her to write a blog about Max's homemade cupcakes, but things didn’t go their way.
Girls were stuck in the ladies’ room to get a change while they bitch about Martha Stewart, unfortunately Martha heard all about it. But girls still didn’t lose the hope to sell out their cupcakes and they made sure that Martha tried their cupcake in the LADIES ROOM and she did.
And that is the motivation you need for your startup. How far will you go to market your own services or products?
Max and Caroline gave beautiful examples of what you should do and what you should not do. But, the best thing is that they learnt from their mistakes and somehow turned around fate for themselves. And I think that is one of the best lessons that you could ever learn from Two Broke Girls.
